Sparse Nested MIMO array for DOA Estimation Based on Co-prime Frequencies and Sparse Reconstruction

This paper presents a dual co-prime frequencies operation mode of sparse nested MIMO array in direction-of-arrival estimation. In single-frequency operation mode, a physical sparse nested MIMO array is impossible to resolve DOA estimation because of its sparse uniform distribution. We utilize dual co-prime Frequencies to obtain a equivalent co-prime only-receiving array at the reference frequency named as dual frequencies cooperative array. Due to the use of dual co-prime
frequencies operation mode, it can generate the equivalent dual frequencies cooperative array which contains far more array elements than the sparse MIMO nested itself. So the number of all the lags covariance matrix of equivalent dual frequencies cooperative array is significantly increased. when using the sparse
reconstruction technology, it utilize all the lags which offers the DOF and estimate both coherent and incoherent targets. As the result, the sparse nested array with dual co-prime frequency mode can not only estimate DOA, but also estimate the number of targets far more than the number of array elements of the
array itself.
