In this study, a series of magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) modified with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were prepared to explore the excellent ratios of adhesion properties, and also to improve the adhesion force and magneto-sensitive adhesion performance. A self-designed and constructed test rig was used to measure the adhesion force of the prepared modified MREs under the same experimental conditions in various cases. The experimental results showed that the adhesion force of the modified MREs increased by 359.4% when the mass fraction of GNPs was increased from 0% to 1.5%. The adhesion force of the modified MREs also increased with the increased applied magnetic field, the adhesion force of the sample containing 15 vol% ferromagnetic particles increased by 65.6% when the magnetic field increased from 0 mT to 300 mT. Further, possible mechanisms for improving the magneto-sensitive adhesion properties of the modified MREs are proposed. The tunable adhesion properties of the modified MREs provide a new approach for controlling adhesion and desorption.
