                摘要
The continuously rising emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) is a global challenge. Among various CO2 reduction strategies, carbon capturing happens to be the approach which can lead to drastic cuts in CO2 emissions. This presentation addresses an alternative pathway for capturing CO2, originating from coal-fired thermal power plants. The microalgal-mediated biofixation potential of CO2 appears to be a promising approach owing to the utilization of CO2 (from flue gas of thermal power plants) during photosynthesis process of microalgae. Coupled with bioenergy potential of microalgae (grown in wastewater), integration of biorefinery to the conventional thermal power plants is suggested an alternative route to achieve near-zero emissions. This presentation addresses existing challenges and knowledge gaps for the appropriateness of this approach considering installed thermal power plants in Thar coal field, a potential hub for large-scale cultivation of microalgae as natural carbon capture facility. Majority of coal reserves of Pakistan are concentrated in Sindh Province, more precisely in Thar Coalfield (More than 90% of total coal reserves). Currently, only Thar coalfield is producing 2640 MW of power generation, thus indicating the expansive coal sector of the country. However, this also requires addressing the increasing carbon footprint of coal-based power generation. The integration of large-scale microalgal growth in ponds in Thar, connected with thermal power plants, and incorporating the biorefinery concept presents a holistic approach towards addressing environmental challenges, promoting economic development, and advancing sustainable energy solutions. This unconventional paradigm harnesses the potential of synergistic collaborations between traditional industries and emerging biotechnologies in driving positive socio-economic and environmental outcomes.
