Reactor power control has traditionally been employed in base–load operating conditions. However, with the increasing share of nuclear power in the electricity generation mix, the need for nuclear reactors to operate in load-following mode is becoming more prevalent. Load-following operation, where the reactor power is adjusted to meet the varying electrical demand, introduces new challenges in nuclear reactor power control. To address this challenge, this paper presents design and analysis of a fuzzy sliding mode control (FSMC), which is a robust nonlinear an advanced control fuzzy logic method algorithm for power tracking control of P.W.R nuclear reactor during load–following operation is presented. The proposed control method combines the robustness of sliding mode control and the flexibility of fuzzy logic to effectively manage and enable stable load-following operation. The P.W.R reactor core is simulated based on point kinetics equations and three delayed neutron groups. The model assumes that the feedback from lumped–fuel and coolant temperatures. To validate the proposed controller, simulations are performed and the utilized methods were easy to implement in practical applications. Moreover, the fuzzy sliding mode control exhibited the desired dynamic behavior throughout the entire output-power tracking process. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller in terms of performance, stability, and robustness against disturbances.
