Human-water relationship is complex and involves many elements. It is of great significance to explore the mechanism, research content and harmonious regulation methods of human-water relationship to improve the regional harmonious level and promote the harmonious development of human-water relationship. we elucidate the complexity of human-water relationship from three aspects, complexity in the human system and the water system, complexity in their coupling, and complexity in their interaction. We examine the interaction process in human-water relationship, and reveal its mechanism based on the interaction of these two components, and summarizes some issues in human-water relationship. We summarize the theoretical research content of human-water relationship, including the basic principle of human-water harmony, the criterion of human-water harmony, the mathematical basis of human-water harmony theory, and the theory of human-water harmony balance. It expounds the methodology of human-water relationship, including the human-water harmony identification method, the human-water harmony assessment method, and the human-water harmony regulation method. We list some application practices of human-water harmony. It includes the application practice of human-water harmony assessment, the application of human-water harmony theory in solving the three major water problems of water shortage, flood disaster and water environment pollution, the application of human-water harmony theory in water resources planning, management and water strategy, and the application practice of harmonious development between water resources and economy and society, and give examples. Then, we systematically introduced the research content and research methods of harmonious regulation of human-water relationship. Examples are given from dynamic simulation and regulation of groundwater, emergency regulation of sudden water pollution accident, bilateral regulation model of water resources supply and demand, anti-pollution regulation of gate dam group based on simulation-optimization, multi-objective reservoir optimization dispatching, multi-objective optimal allocation of water resources, water-food-energy-ecology coordination regulation, regional crop water consumption optimization. Finally, we introduce the basic ideas and theoretical methods of harmony regulation of human-water relationship in detail, and give application examples, which provides an effective means to solve the issues of human-water relationship.
