The assessment of carbon absorption potential in marine fisheries is fundamental to promoting the green and efficient development of the marine economy and is a key driver for achieving carbon neutrality. This study utilizes data from Sentinel-2 satellite remote sensing imagery, combined with a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification model, to classify and analyze four types of nearshore aquaculture areas in China: Floating Raft Aquaculture, Net Cage Aquaculture, Pond Aquaculture, and Tidal Flat Aquaculture. By constructing six carbon absorption capacity assessment models, the study calculates the carbon absorption potential across different aquaculture methods and regions. The results indicate that the annual carbon absorption of China's coastal marine fisheries ranges from 8.2·10⁵ to 4.5·10⁶ t, with significant variation in carbon absorption potential under different farming practices and environmental conditions. The South China Sea region demonstrates the highest carbon absorption capacity, ranging from approximately 3.2·10⁵ to 2.82·10⁶ t. Shellfish culture in Floating Raft Aquaculture and fish and crab culture in Pond Aquaculture exhibit strong carbon absorption capacities. This study provides a scientific basis for the assessment of carbon absorption in China's coastal marine industries and offers valuable insights for future carbon management strategies.
