Tropical cyclones (TCs) interact with the ocean in various ways. Many previous studies have suggested because of the upwelling generated by the strong winds associated with a TC can cause its weakening. At the same time, climate models have suggested TCs will intensify under global warming. In this talk, we will first review ocean processes that can either intensify or weaken TCs on weather time scales. We will then discuss the contribution of the ocean in the changes in intensity on climate scales.
