Previous studies have indicated a significant trend of northwestward migration in the trajectories of typhoons over the Western Pacific, yet their climatic impacts on mainland China remain unclear. This study utilizes two sets of typhoon best track datasets from the Shanghai Typhoon Institute and the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center in Tokyo, Japan, covering the period from 1965 to 2024. Coupled with daily precipitation observation data from over 2,000 ground meteorological stations across China, an objective separation method was employed to extract daily typhoon-induced precipitation. Subsequently, the climatic characteristics and causes of typhoon precipitation changes over mainland China in the past 60 years were analyzed. During summer (June-August), both the frequency of typhoon occurrences influencing China and the total typhoon precipitation were significantly higher than those in autumn (September-November). In summer, the frequency and precipitation of strong and weak typhoons influencing China were comparable. However, over the past 60 years, the geographical regions experiencing the highest frequency and precipitation from strong typhoons have shown a distinct northward migration trend. Further analysis reveals that both typhoon best track datasets indicate a significant increasing linear trend in the northward shift of strong typhoon trajectories affecting the mainland during summer. This suggests that within the context of climate change leading to the northwestward migration of typhoon activity in the Western Pacific, the northward movement of strong impacting typhoons is the primary climatic cause for the increase in typhoon precipitation in northern China (north of the Yangtze River).
