In this paper, an alternative implementation for the hybrid free space optical (FSO) /radio frequency (RF) based on millimeter wavelength (MMW) wireless communication system with diversity combining scheme is presenting. The signals of the proposed system are transmitted simultaneously at the same data rate over parallel FSO and RF link. The well-known selection combining (SC) diversity scheme is considered in the proposed system’s receiver for combining the different received signals in the electrical domain. New closed-form expressions for the average bit error rate (BER) and outage probability are formulated for tracing the system performances over various turbulence channel conditions. The proposed system’s performance results over the hybrid FSO/RF channel clearly indicate to the proposed system fully advantageous of the complementary hybrid FSO/RF channel properties, even in strong turbulence channel conditions. In addition, the BER performance comparisons show the proposed system superiority performance comparing with the only FSO system with no combining scheme
