Assalamualaikum W.B.T. and Greetings.
I wish you all a warm welcome to Malaysia and to this ASEAN Regional Conference on Elder Abuse and Neglect 2017. This conference aims to bring together academicians, researchers, policy makers and public health specialists to deliberate on issues concerning elder abuse and neglect as well as to discuss ideas and approaches in drawing together the best protection for the elderly in the ASEAN region in general and Malaysia specifically.
By the year 2030, Malaysia will be in the category of ageing nations with the elderly comprising of more than 15% of the population. As such, Malaysia needs to start making preparations as early as possible to become an ageing nation.
On 19th November 2015, a National Seminar on Protecting Elderly against Abuse and Neglect-A Legal Strategy was held as part of the research activities for the Sub-Program 5, under the Prevent Elder Abuse and Neglect initiative (PEACE) research project. As a result of the seminar, the researchers were able to identify the weaknesses in the existing legal framework in addressing issues concerning elder abuse and neglect.
Before a final decision is made as to what is the best approach in addressing these issues, it is important for the researchers to see the development of legal strategies on these issues in the ASEAN region. As such, the sub-program 5 under the PEACE @ Faculty of Law would like to organise the ARCEN 2017.
The outcome of the conference will be reflected in a book consisting of the articles presented during the conference.
