The 2018 Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on "Cornea and Ocular Surface Biology and Pathology" will explore the mechanisms through which the cornea, conjunctiva, tear film and immune system operate under homeostatic and pathological conditions. With our ageing population, the chances of each of us experiencing a sight threatening eye condition is significantly increasing. The aim of the meeting is to share knowledge such that translation of fundamental research findings can be expedited into the development of sight saving modalities. Presentations will feature latest technologies in biological sciences such as the use of induced pluripotent stem cells, as well as genetics and global "omics" analysis for comprehensive studies. Novel interactions of the immune system with microorganisms and host tissue will also be discussed. Invited speakers represent a wide-range of scientific disciplines, including cell and molecular biology, neuronal biology, biochemistry, molecular genetics, immunology and microbiology. In addition, physician/scientists will discuss anterior segmental diseases that have commonality to pathologies seen in other specialties as a means to gain insight into such disease processes. By bringing together investigators outside of the ocular community as well as those at the forefront of ocular surface biology, the GRC on Cornea and Ocular Surface Biology and Pathology will provide unique opportunities for cross-fertilization among young investigators, including graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and early career researchers with leaders in several fields.
The associated Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) is designed to allow and encourage graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, early career scientists and junior faculty to share their research in an active and non-intimidating research environment. Short talks and poster sessions are also encompassed in this seminar. The GRS will conclude by a mentoring session of early career and estabslished researchers worldwide and by an evaluation session.
