The topic of this wokshop concerns the connections between thermodynamics, mathematical systems theory and control. The intrinsic properties of physical systems such as passivity or the existence of conserved quantities and the balance equations gave rise to different successful methods in control. The structure and properties of physical systems may be derived from the basic principles of Equilibrium and Non-equilibrium Thermodynamics.
The relation with Systems' Theory and Control has been steadily increasing since 40 years and numerous research groups around the globe, pertaining to control groups in Robotics, Chemical Engineering and Control Engineering contributed to it. These contributions range from industrial applications of passivity theory set in the context of classical thermodynamics to the derivation of system theoretic foundations for reversible and irreversible systems.
The objective of this workshop is to bring representative researchers from industry and university together to take stock of where we are, discuss open problems and future directions for research in physical modelling, control theory, design methods and applications where techniques are effectively tailored to exploit thermodynamics.
